Program DownloadThe South China Sea Tsunami Workshop (SCSTW) was initiated in 2007 by an internationally recognized tsunami expert, Professor Philip L.-F. Liu at Cornell University, U.S.A. (Now is a Distinguished Professor and serves as Vice President for Research and Technology at the National University of Singapore). Each year, tsunami experts from the SCS region and the world gather together, update new discoveries and share new understandings of the tsunami related hazards in the South China Sea and worldwide.
In the past ten years (see previous workshops
), the topics of SCSTW have expanded from the tsunami hydrodynamics to very diverse disciplines. Our knowledge evolves over time in light of new observational data, development of process-based models, and more importantly, the collective effort made by multi-disciplinary researchers. Yet challenges remain as our understanding about the tsunamigenic sources in the South China Sea region is still very limited. Large uncertainties exist in the tsunamigenic potential of all the sources, including earthquakes from the Manila subduction zone and other faults, submarine landslides, and volcanic activity, etc. This year, we will discuss these challenges and other relevant issues. The year 2018 is an exciting year, not only because this year marks the 10-year anniversary of the South China Sea Tsunami Workshop, but more importantly, the South China Sea Tsunami Warning Advisory Center has officially launched in this May after years’ preparation efforts. The launch represents a significant leap in creating and insuring safer coastlines in the South China Sea bordering nations. To celebrate this major milestone, please join us for this years’ workshop in the Garden City-Singapore. This workshop is co-organized by Earth Observatory of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, National University of Singapore, IOC South China Sea Tsunami Warning Advisory Center, Beijing.
