SCSTW-9
-
The South China Sea (SCS) and its adjacent small basins including Sulu Sea and Celebes Sea are commonly identified as tsunami-prone region by its historic records on seismicity and tsunamis. However, quantification of tsunami hazard in the SCS region remained a challenging issue due to highly complex tectonic setting and multiple seismic sources within and surrounding this area. According to historical records, a number of devastating tsunamis have occurred in the region. For example, the tsunami which attacked Keelung in 1867 is believed to have resulted in the loss of several hundred lives. More recently, the tsunami, generated by the M8.1 earthquake which swept Moro Gulf of the Celebes Sea in 1976, resulted in more than 8,000 dead or missing, 10,000 injured and 90,000 homeless (Solov¡ŠEv et al., 1986). The most recent Mw 7.0 earthquake offshore of Taiwan in 2006 once again raised attention and awareness of tsunami hazard of the region.
The South China Sea Tsunami Workshop (SCSTW) was initiated in 2007 by an internationally recognized tsunami expert, Professor Philip L.-F. Liu at Cornell University, U.S.A. (Now serves as Vice President of National University of Singapore). To date, it has been conducted for 8 times in Asia-Pacific area. The workshop aims to weave an international academic net, in which strong interactions and collaborations among coastal physical oceanographers, geophysicists, and engineers from the countries in South China Sea Region were combined together. Through this workshop, potential devastating tsunami disaster and hazard mitigation in this region was profoundly discussed. For more information, please visit the SCSTW official website: http://tsunami.ihs.ncu.edu.tw/~scstw/index.html.
SCSTW-9 warmly welcomes not only the scientists in the fields of hydrodynamics and tsunami, but also in the fields of Seismology, Geology, Sedimentology, Disaster Management, and social science. The main topics for the SCSTW-9 include, but not limited to, the following:
- Seismology, tectonics of regional and basin-wide scales;
- Tsunami Forecasting tools and skills;
- Tsunami-like wave dynamics: Propagation and coastal evolvement;
- Tsunami hazard assessment and mitigation;
- Seismic and tsunami observations and post-event surveys;
- New technology potential for tsunami warning;
- Typhoon, Storm surge, and relevant forecasting method in South China Sea.
The workshop will have keynote and invited speakers for each topical session.
